What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is an ancient form of therapy used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This healing technique is used to treat various kinds of ailments and conditions. It involves the use of heat and a natural herb known as “moxa,” commonly referred to as “mugwort.”

In Eastern culture, it is believed moxibustion can help by increasing the flow of qi or “chi” through the whole body. While this type of treatment may be considered a standalone procedure, it is often performed in combination with other TCM methods such as acupuncture. With the introduction of TCM to Western civilization, things like acupuncture and moxibustion have picked up considerable steam due to their effectiveness.

What Are the Different Types of Moxibustion Therapy?

Many people may not realize there are different types of moxibustion procedures. Choosing between the following types of moxibustion treatments will depend on your specific needs.

Indirect Moxibustion

Indirect moxibustion employs the use of a stick to light a piece of moxa which is placed at the top of an acupuncture needle. As the moxa heats and burns, the heat travels from the tops of the needle all the way to the treated area. The heat penetrates the skin allowing healing to take place.

Direct Moxibustion

In direct moxibustion, a therapist places a piece of moxa – generally in the form of a cone – on top of the skin, where an acupuncture needle would be inserted. The therapist then proceeds to light the moxa. Unlike indirect moxibustion, where heat travels through an acupuncture needle until it reaches your skin, in direct moxibustion heat penetrates deeper into the skin. Generally, this process will not harm the patient as the burning moxa is retired before it reaches the skin and damages it.

What Are the Benefits of Moxibustion?

Improve Blood Circulation

As the different points in your body are treated with moxibustion in combination with techniques such as acupuncture, the treatment can help improve blood circulation. As the heat penetrates the treated area, it relaxes your muscles, improving the flow of chi throughout the body. For centuries, this alternative method has helped millions of people. At YAO Pure Medicine, our therapists can help you get a rejuvenating, energizing moxibustion therapy.

Help Improve Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a debilitating condition affecting the lives of millions of people in the U.S. and around the world. According to recent projections reported by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), by 2020, doctors would have diagnosed 63 million people with arthritis. Moxibustion can help treat the symptoms associated with the condition. For instance, the use of moxa at specific pressure points can help improve pain and mobility in people diagnosed with arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Improve Digestive Problems

Unfortunately, millions of people suffer from digestive problems in the U.S. One of the most well-known digestive conditions affecting the lives of millions of Americans is IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). People suffering from IBS often experience acute stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, and other debilitating symptoms. Moxibustion can provide relief from the symptoms associated with IBS.

Moxibustion, while simple in its concept and practice, should not be practiced by untrained people. This TCM technique requires the deep understanding that comes with practice and experience. While moxibustion’s healing properties are well-known among many people, it is always best to consult with your primary care physician to see if this type of treatment is right for you. For instance, if you are pregnant, it is highly recommended to consult with your OB-GYN before attempting moxibustion. While it is known that this technique can help turn breech babies, consulting with your treating physician should always be your primary choice.
